Why We Start with Parent-Only Sessions in Therapy

When you first begin therapy for your child, it’s completely natural to wonder:“When will you actually start working with my child?”
It’s a fair question; and an important one.
But here’s the part that often gets missed:
We already are.
Why we start with parents
Your child doesn’t exist in isolation, and neither do their challenges or strengths.
They exist within:
your family routines
your home environment
your relationships
your day-to-day rhythms
Spending time with you first helps us understand the full picture.
We’re not just gathering information. We’re identifying:
what’s really driving the challenges
what’s already working (and should be built on)
what matters most to your family
Without this, therapy can easily miss the mark by focusing on the wrong skills or using strategies that don’t fit your real life.
Better understanding = better therapy
When we take the time to get this right from the start:
therapy becomes more targeted
strategies are more relevant
progress happens faster
Instead of trial-and-error, we can be intentional.
What our onboarding process looks like
To make sure therapy is meaningful from the very beginning, we follow a structured process:
1. Parent-only initial session
This is where we listen. We learn about your child’s history, routines, strengths, challenges, and your goals.
2. Child session
We meet your child, begin building rapport, and create a sense of safety and connection.
3. Assessment session
We choose and complete the right assessments to understand your child’s current skills and needs.
4. Goal setting session
We work with you to create clear, functional goals and give you practical strategies you can start using straight away.
You are a central part of therapy
Therapy isn’t something that happens to your child for one hour a fortnight.
The biggest changes happen in everyday moments: at home, at school, in routines.
That’s why we work with you from the very beginning.
Because when you feel confident and supported, your child benefits every single day.
In our next posts, we’ll break down each step of this process so you know exactly what to expect and why it matters.
